Samsung E6 e-reader offers handwriting, audio capabilities; $299, Barnes & Noble

March 9th, 2010

Samsung on Tuesday announced its first e-book reader for the U.S. market, the E6 e-reader, which will arrive at Barnes & Noble in the spring for $299.

First previewed at CES 2010 in January, Samsung’s e-reader offers 802.11 b/g Wi-Fi connectivity, Bluetooth 2.0, “advanced handwriting capabilities” for taking notes via an electromagnetic resonance (EMR) stylus pen and a 6-inch, 8-gray scale e-ink display that manages 800×600 resolution.

The device also has voice recording functionality for audio memos and annotations, as well as journal, scheduler and memo applications.

The E6 supports e-pub, PDF/a, TXT, BMP and JPG formats. It has built-in front speakers and a headphone jack, to be paired with text-to-speech (TTS) technology. (It’s also got an MP3 player.)

It also has what Samsung calls EmoLink technology, which enables users to write angsty coffeeshop odes, er, I mean, share content between other Samsung e-readers.

Interestingly, the E6’s scheduler can sync with Microsoft Outlook on your PC.

The E6 has 2GB of internal memory, which allows for 1,500 books. It’s got an external microSD card slot that expands to 16GB.

The E6 will be available in the spring for $299. (No word on the 10-inch E10 or QWERTY E61.)

Nanometer makes for high performance batteries

Nanometer makes for high performance batteries

With so many devices these days relying on a whole lot of battery power, it is no surprise to see battery technology advancement high on the agenda of many companies. After all, you'd hate to run out of juice just before you finish that important phone call, right? Here's a new method that could potentially change the way we look at batteries - minuscule tubes coated with a chemical fuel which functions as a power source with 100 times more electrical power by weight than conventional batteries. Each time these nano-scale "fuses" burn, they will drive an electrical current along their length at staggering speeds, resulting in a raft of energy applications. While it will take a fair bit of time before such technology hits the mainstream, if ever, it is still encouraging to know that people are looking into it as an alternative source of energy.

Phantom HD GOLD

Now this is one high-speed digital video camera that you would probably place on your wish list, leaving it there perpetually. Why do we say so? Well, the Phantom HD GOLD retails for $118,000 thereabouts for starters, and it maxes out at 2,048 x 2,048 resolution while capturing a phenomenal 555 frames per second (fps). Should you decide to decrease the resolution, the fps capability will obviously increase, which means a 16 × 8 pixel icon can be shot at 100,000 fps. Features of the Phantom HD GOLD include 32GB of internal memory that are augmented by swappable Phantom CineMags.

Carpuccino runs on coffee

Carpuccino runs on coffee

For many of us, it is a nice, hot cup of coffee that keeps us going through the day, which strangely enough is the same case for the Carpuccino that you see above. What used to be a standard 1988 Volkswagen Scirocco is now a coffee-powered car, but mileage isn't that ideal (and a waste of good coffee, we might add) since it requires 56 espressos for a single mile. It will run on any brand as long as the coffee is very dry and comes in a pellet form factor that enables the air to move through the pile of coffee as it burns.
